Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

How Does Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Work?

Spinal decompression is an incredibly common yet effective tool that many chiropractors use to treat lower back pain, upper back pain, and pain caused by herniated discs. Many people might be hesitant to undergo spinal decompression treatment if they are unaware of how the procedure works. Fortunately, we're here to answer all your questions about spinal decompression treatment, also known as traction therapy.

.

At Pike Therapy Center, our chiropractors in Huber Heights, OH, have helped hundreds of patients find relief using spinal decompression! This therapy is painless, relaxing, and incredibly effective at helping reduce pain. You can start to feel like yourself again in as little as a couple of weeks!

What is Spinal Decompression Chiropractic Care?

Spinal decompression is also known as traction therapy. As the name suggests, this is a type of physical therapy that is aided with the use of a traction machine. This machine gently stretches the spine, opening up the vertebrae and allowing the discs in between those vertebrae to gently expand. This does two things:

  • Causes negative pressure to release, alleviating symptoms of herniated discs
  • Reduces pressure off of pinched nerves in the spine

What Is a Herniated Disc?

Herniated, or bulging discs, are a common problem that can occur with age. This medical issue is caused when the discs in between the vertebrae burst and leak out fluid, which in turn begins to compress on nerves in the spine. This can lead to painful symptoms including:

  • Lower back pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Pain upon sitting or walking
  • Numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • Weakness
  • Arm or leg pain

Spinal decompression is an effective way to treat herniated discs without the use of invasive surgery.

What Happens During this Procedure?

During the process, a patient lays face down or face up on a traction bed. They are strapped in at arms and legs, and the traction machine gently stretches their spine out using computer technology. This computer is controlled by a chiropractor, who knows exactly how to adjust it for maximum care.

Treatment sessions do not hurt and only last 30 to 45 minutes. Only your chiropractor will know how many treatments you will need, but typically people can start to feel relief from herniated disc pain within just a couple of weeks!
